The numbers behind this

Speed. The Sun orbits the galactic centre at ~230 km/s (~828,000 km/h). One full lap — a galactic year — takes about 225–250 million years. Last lap, dinosaurs were just getting started.

Tilt. The planets' orbital plane (the ecliptic) is tilted about 60° to the galactic plane, so the corkscrew is squashed rather than symmetric. Planets alternate between leading and trailing the Sun along the direction of travel — Earth is furthest ahead in September and furthest behind in March.

Orientation. The orbital plane holds its orientation fixed in space while the direction of travel slowly swings around the galactic orbit — the same way Earth's fixed axial tilt gives us seasons. Max out speed and helix stretch, zoom out, and you can watch this over a full lap (the "galactic lap" counter tracks progress).

Helix, not vortex. A vortex means particles interacting through drag and friction. The planets feel only gravity and trace independent helices — same shape family, completely different physics.

The Sun spins too — unevenly. Being a ball of plasma, it rotates differentially: about 25 days per turn at the equator but ~34 days near the poles. Watch the bright bands: the equator visibly laps the poles. Its spin axis is tipped 7.25° off the orbital plane.

Scale. Sizes, distances, and speeds are all compressed here — at true scale you'd see a single bright dot. The real helix is far more stretched too: each year the Sun covers ~48.5 AU of galactic track, nearly 50× the radius of Earth's orbit. Drag "helix stretch" to 100% for the true, almost-straight pitch.

Not the black hole. Sagittarius A* sits at the galactic centre, but at ~4 million solar masses it's a rounding error of the galaxy's total. The Sun orbits the combined mass of stars, gas, and dark matter — we're not circling, or falling into, the black hole itself.

Why nothing collides. Two reasons. Survivorship: everything on a collision course already collided billions of years ago (that's how the planets, and the Moon, formed) — today's solar system is the stable leftovers. And emptiness: even at 230 km/s it takes ~1,400 years to cross one light-year, and the nearest star is over 4 light-years away.

Frames of reference. The Sun-centred flat view and this galaxy-centred helix are equally valid — there's no absolute frame in the universe. The helix is what a galactocentric observer sees; the flat ellipses are what the Sun sees. Both are correct physics.
